The safest way to protect your finances is by being educated about the risks. Trico Community Federal credit Union has set up protection features such as fraud alerts, fraud precaution call systems, and PIN management. Here are some Debit Card Safety Tips for you, the user, which will help prevent against fraud.
Keep your PIN to yourself. Remember it and don’t tell anyone what it is. Do not let any sales representatives enter your PIN for you. Do not write it down on anything, especially not on the card itself or any documents that are close to the card. Be sure to change your PIN regularly. Do not use numbers that are easy for anyone to guess (like your birth year, graduation year, last four of your social, address, etc.).
When getting cash or using your card in public places, be sure to cover the key pad with your free hand when entering your PIN. Take someone with you when using an ATM and getting cash out. Use machines in well-lit areas and try to stay in public.
If you are using your card to purchase items online, make sure that the site you are using is secure. You will be able to tell if it is secure by looking in the address bar at the beginning of the URL. You will see “https,” the “s” means secure which means that your card information will be encrypted when it is sent.
Check your account regularly and report any suspicious activity immediately. If you lose your card or it is stolen, tell you credit union immediately so your card will be frozen. It will be much easier to get fraudulent charges taken care of if they are reported in a timely fashion.
